Sur la route – The great outdoors

Mom is at home and dad works in the video game business

The story of this globetrotting family began in 2004 when Francis left the Quebec City area to join his new love in Montreal. A medievalist by training, Chantal then traveled to China as an exchange student to learn Mandarin, where she was offered a position as a French teacher, which she accepted. Her answer was also a big “yes” when Francis popped the question on the Great Wall... how romantic!

Their daughters tagged along with their travelling parents “sur la route” when they were only a few weeks old. Because they’re homeschooled, the girls are able to accompany their parents around the world. They’ve been to France, Spain, Iceland, Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, Western Canada, the Maritimes and much of the United States.

During their travels, the family often seeks out alternatives to traditional hotel accommodations by checking into a homestay—lodging offered by a local in their home, which provides a more authentic experience. Now, when Chantal books a place to stay, the first thing Francis and the kids ask is if there’s running water and a toilet!
